Your results will depend on many factors, including your starting weight, other medical conditions, and individual program design and compliance. It works if you work it!
The human body has three sources of energy to draw upon; dietary carbohydrates, protein, and fat. If you were to starve your body of food for several days, your body would first burn all of the sugar in your blood and stored sugar (Glycogen) in your liver. Then, it would get protein by ripping up your muscle; this leads to that look of malnourishment. Finally, if your kidneys didn’t fail first, your body would draw upon your fat stores for energy.
When on the VLCD, dietary carbohydrates are strictly limited, so using sugar for energy is not possible. We give you optimum protein, so burning muscle is also not possible. Therefore, your body is forced to burn fat for energy. The fat is released into the blood stream, travels to the liver and is converted to ketones. Ketones are then released back into the bloodstream and used for energy.
